Neiman Marcus Group Revolutionizes Impact throughout Earth Month

The integrated luxury retailer’s efforts advance sustainable products and services in line with its 2025 ESG goals

Brand partners and next generation of industry talent engaged through innovative partnerships

DALLAS, TX - April 4, 2023 - This Earth Month, Neiman Marcus Group (NMG) continues to leverage its unique position as an integrated luxury retailer with the world’s most desired brands to lead fashion toward a more sustainable and equitable future. The company announced it will enroll brand partners in a new climate training program and celebrate the next generation of sustainable and ethical fashion industry talent at Fashion Scholarship Fund’s annual FSF Live Gala in New York.

In recent years, NMG’s Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) strategy has become a critical part of the company’s growth and transformation. Last spring, NMG published an inaugural report, titled Our Journey To Revolutionize Impact, which included 2025 goals to:

  • Reduce scope 1 & 2 emissions 50% from a 2019 baseline
  • Increase revenue from sustainable and ethical products to 10%
  • Extend the useful life of 1,000,000 luxury items through circular services

“From the footprint of our buildings to the length of time our customers treasure the products we sell, we intend to make an impact on environmental issues across our value chain,” said Ali Mize, Sr Director of ESG, Belonging & Corporate Philanthropy at NMG. “Earth Month is a great time to celebrate the progress we’ve made and invite customers, brands, and the next generation of fashion talent to join us in accelerating this change.”

As the company takes purposeful action to combat climate change, it is supporting top brand partners and vendors to do the same. This month, NMG officially becomes the first fashion retailer to join Supplier Leadership on Climate Transition (Supplier LoCT), a consortium established in 2021 to equip participant’s suppliers with the training, tools and consulting support needed to successfully measure greenhouse gas emissions, set science-based targets, implement abatement plans and disclose progress to CDP. In its first season, NMG has enrolled nearly 20 top brands and vendors with varying climate maturity levels.

To continue building on its fur exit and increasing revenue from sustainable and ethical products, the company will also be sponsoring the 2023 Sustainable Fashion Forum for the second time this year. The panel will discuss ongoing work with the Responsible Business Coalition to develop the Impact Index: a tech-agnostic framework that defines trusted, third-party certified sustainable and ethical product-level claims that will be consistent and accepted at all major luxury retailers.

Last night, the company’s Earth Month activities commenced as fashion leaders convened at the Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF)’s annual FSF Live Gala in New York City. Since 2019, NMG and The Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation have partnered with Fashion Scholarship Fund, the fashion industry’s leading education and workforce development nonprofit. The company recently engaged its customers in a point-of-sale fundraising campaign that raised $125,000 to establish the NMG x FSF scholarship in sustainable and ethical fashion. The program offers students a $10,000 scholarship, an executive mentor from NMG and access to year-round programming on sustainable and ethical fashion from NMG’s industry partners. The NMG x FSF scholars will each be wearing pieces from Neiman Marcus’ Fashioned for Change edits as they are honored at the FSF Live Gala. Today scholars attended a behind-the-scenes tour of Fashionphile’s NYC Authentication Center to understand its role in supporting NMG’s goal to extend the useful life of 1,000,000 luxury items through circular services by 2025.

More information about NMG’s environmental sustainability goals and progress will be included in the company’s second ESG report, to be released this summer.
